competency testing during orientation

Is it a standard practice to have tests during stages of orientation? I've had to demonstrate skills and have had tests during my hospital orientation. For example, I have quizzes with about 10 questions which I'm able to use any resource available to answer the questions. These questions usually pertain to looking up a policy or procedure. I have to demonstrate a skill proficiently with the orientation coordinator observing, such as physical assessment or NP suctioning on a patient. Then I have to role play patient teaching. Last week it was teach my coordinator how to do peak flows. Feels like I'm back in school and it's added stress. I don't know if the hospital does this as a measure to make sure a nurse is ready to come off orientation. Some of my friends that I graduated with that work at other hospitals say it's ridiculous and we're licensed RN's and it seems crazy.

I haven't been on orientation for a new job in over 10 years. I will do whatever it takes to get through orientation and be successful in my new job, but just wondering if it's common...

Formalization of new employee is becoming more common. This is an expensive process, and employers need to have safeguards in place by way of objective measurement to ensure that all outcomes are actually achieved. It is also a safeguard for you..... much better to use clear, objective measures than to rely on subjective ratings by a cranky preceptor, right?
