College of the Canyons Fall 2017

Published

Anyone here applying for fall 2017 at COC? I am waiting on my invitation to take the TEAS test and have been studying for it. Anyone care to share their stats?

I have a BA,

3.7 overall gpa

3.8 Bio gpa

I feel like my grades are competitive, but I'm not sure if they're good enough to help me get in. I have a W on my transcript from 12 years ago when I dropped out of microbiology at age 17, and she said that stays on your record which is annoying since I retook it last year and got an A.

Anyway, hoping to find others who are applying for this fall!

Hi! I have applied to COC and AVC for the fall. I have a 3.2 overall, a 4.0 in the sciences, work experience, and a 90.7 on the TEAS. I spoke with someone in the nursing office who told me that last year 65 points and up (on their multi-criteria points system) got you into the program. I really hope I get in!! Good luck!

Thats a really great score on the TEAS! When did you take it? If I get an 85 on the TEAS, I should have a score of 73 out of 100, but I don't know how much they will subtract for having a W on my transcript. When did you take your TEAS? Did you take it for another school? I thought COC was sending out invitations to take it in March

I took it through PSI testing, because I needed to have my score on file with AVC by march 1st. I am glad I got it out of the way, because I was really nervous going into it. Hopefully they don't penalize you too much for the W, especially since it is so old! It might be too late, but I wonder if you could do academic renewal on that to get it taken off of your transcript? Either way, your points sound competitive. Do you have a background as a doula? I ask, because I ended up choosing nursing after going back to school to be a lactation consultant, so that is within my area of interest as well :) Good luck with everything! :)

That must be a relief getting it over with! I have been a certified labor doula, lactation counselor and childbirth educator for 3 years. I would love to work in labor and delivery & hope to one day be a nurse midwife.

Is COC your first choice? I am only applying to COC because I have 4 children (6, 4, 2, and 7 months) so I need to be close to home, but I wish I could have applied other places to increase my chances! I will have to look into academic renewal. I haven't heard of it!

Very cool! I too am intrigued with pursing nurse midwife, but I am open to other possibilities. I became a CLE about 3 years ago, and was working in a lactation center. I started taking classes with the idea of becoming an IBCLC, but as I went along, I decided RN would be a better choice for me. I still would like to work in lactation, and I may get my IBCLC certification after I complete my RN. COC is my first choice too, because I live locally. I have a 6 year old and a 4 year old, and am a single parent, so staying in town would be awesome! Ask your counselor about academic renewal...I was able to remove old math classes from my gpa, and replace them with my new grade. Did you take your pre-reqs at COC?

So I called COC and they said the W would have been taken into account while evaluating my transcripts and since they already approved them, I should be fine. He said he now just looks at overall gpa which is good!

Yes, I took my prereqs at COC! I finished last summer.... I shouldn't have taken the summer school anatomy class. I was 9 months pregnant and had to finish 4 days after having the baby and its my only B so far. I wish I would have waited until the fall, but oh well! Did you take them at COC?

Well that's good news! Me too, I took anatomy and physiology in the spring, and Micro this past summer! I am presently doing a second semester of chem at coc, while waiting to get into a program. You still did well in anatomy, that is impressive to have a baby during the semester, I can't even imagine! Good luck with the TEAS, and keep me updated about your journey. Hopefully we will both be starting this fall :)

I hope we both make it into the program! I imagine with a 90 on your TEAS test you have an excellent chance! The guy I talked to at COC made it sound like the TEAS is the ultimate factor & a 90 is a great score!! I am really hoping I can do that well too! I'll keep updating. I'm surprised there aren't more people on here!

Got an email to take the TEAS 6 on April 14! got an 84 on my practice test, so I'm hoping I can study and bring it up before the exam!

Hi!! I just noticed there are some people in here for the upcoming semester. I am currently in my first semester of COC's nursing program. If you have any specific questions feel free to email me!! I had so many questions prior to getting into the program so do not hesitate. :) [email protected]
