CNA and GNA

Hello i am starting a GNA class which i though was the same as a CNA. I got a email for the program talking about the course which to me looks like they are different.

The email said: This is a GNA course. It will perpare you to be licensed as a CNA. Then you can take additional testing so you can become certified as a GNA.

(CNA=CERTIFIED NURSING ASSISTANT GNA=GERIATRIC NURSING ASSISTANT)

I thought that a GNA and a CNA are the same thing just different names.

Does anyone know the difference? I looked at some posts on here but am not finding answer.

Thank you!

It will vary by state, but here, a GNA is a CNA who took an extra (very short) course specifically geared toward caring for Geriatrics. I believe at my old facility, the course was only an extra day or so, but don't quote me on that. I don't really know anyone who has taken it nor have I ever seen a job asking for it. So, while it couldn't hurt, if it costs extra money, I wouldn't bother if it were me.

Are you in Maryland? Because I am a GNA & basically all it is an extra test you take after your CNA program is done & it allows you to work in a nursing home. If you do not decide to become a GNA it is cool & you will still be able to be employed in assisted living facilities, hospitals, home health agencies,etc.. But if you know for a fact that you want to work @ a nursing home than you need to be a GNA. Hope that helps :)

Yes I am in maryland. Where would you take the test?

Thank you

I took it at the same place I did my CNA program. A proctor came to the facility & we took the written test & then she watched us as we performed 5 skills. After that was done the results were faxed back in about 20 minutes & we were notified if we passed or not.
