Childbirth Educator?

So as I'm staying home with my newborn, I'm wanting to start my own business as a childbirth educator. I have my RN, BSN, and am enrolled in a childbirth certifying course, but don't have certification yet.

Can I teach childbirth education privately as a business as a nurse? I mean who is to say I can't? I would obviously make sure my classes were evidence based and straight from referenced materials. I just don't want to start it and for some reason "get in trouble." Isn't certification just a credential to be "hired" as an educator for a hospital or to work for someone else?

thanks so much!

It's like doula work, certification is nice but not necessary. I plan to in the future complete my childbirth education training with Childbirth International which offers a payment plan. Even they are OK with someone starting to teach classes in order to help offset the cost of the training. I'm going to certify in order to maintain access to all information and support the program offers but I am sure most expecting moms are going to make sure that you are certified, although they may ask who you trained with. I did my research into which organization in part decided on CBI because there is no annual fee to remain certified

And most hospitals prefer brand name certification like Lamaze or Bradley from what I hear

That was going to be my side hustle at some point. I'm certified in Lamaze. Where I live though you have to actually register as a business and do all the tax stuff. It was a ton of paperwork so I kinda nixed the idea. But just check your state business laws. But otherwise there's no reason you can't.
