Hi everyone, My classes don't start until Tues but the instructor sent out an email that we should read chapters 1 to 4 and outline the chapters before the first class. After I had a heart attack I googled chapter outline, because in all my classes I've never had to write one. My question is do I need to put a chapter outline in my own words? I would think no since the point is to pull the important bits out of the chapter but there was one website that said to watch for plagiarism. I don't believe we actually turning them in as the grades for this class are based only on the exams according to the syllabus.

I would email the prof back asking if the outline is to be turned in for a grade or for your own use for studying. I never had to turn in an outline.

As TC_2014 said, email your instructor to verify if you'll be turning in your outline for a grade. Chances are you won't be turning it in, but to be safe, you should begin writing your outline as if you will be.
An outline is a highlight of the key points and ideas in each chapter, section, etc. Like you suggested, pull out the main ideas from each section. Write it in your own words because it should force you to think about what you're reading. If you can explain in your own words what you've read, then you demonstrate that you understand the material. That's what teachers want to see.

Chapter outlines are basically structured notes.
Read each chapter section by section. Then on your outline, write the key points and important vocab words for that section. Be sure to use clear headings on each section in your outline as well.
You'll be fine :)
