Certifications

I was just accepted to my schools nursing program and I will start in the fall. I was wondering what are some good certifications to get along with my BSN?

Certifications are not obtained in nursing school. They are obtained by experienced RNs after several years of practice and passing a rigorous certification exam.

If you are referring to BLS/ ACLS and the like- any that are needed are usually obtained either while in school as part of the curriculum or upon employment as an RN.

Thank you for the explanation!

Some of my classmates did ACLS over winter break (we graduate in May). I plan to do NRP once I graduate (I have an offer in mother/baby) and I'm waiting to take the NCLEX. There's a long delay here in CA at the moment, so I'll have some time. I may also do ACLS, I haven't decided.

Before you take NRP and pay for it yourself, see if it is included in orientation. In all maternal child at my hospital is is part of the orientation classes. Plus make sure you can take it before you pass your NCLEX, you may have to have your RN to be able to do the part of the course you need. I don't remember since I have taken it for the last 20 years lol

I wrote this on another post, but will do so again for emphasis. We do not look at advanced certs for new grads when we hire. We know they do not really have the background to do the codes appropriately. We are looking at drug screen, background check, AHA Healthcare Provider BLS and a license. Background checks in Texas include fingerprinting and FBI clearance.
