I’m hoping all you experienced nurses out there can help me. I became a second-career RN in January 2020 (after many years as an English teacher)and got a job in a residency program just as covid hit. My preceptor said I did well and after 2 months I was handling a full pt load on a covid floor. It was hard but I was managing until I got put on nights. No matter what I did I couldn’t sleep during the day and after a couple of months I really didn’t think I was safe to practice (accidentally threw out blood one night and that scared me) so I gave my two weeks notice. I got a job in pediatric homecare and worked mostly for a wonderful family caring for a profoundly brain damaged little boy w a g tube and frequent seizures. After 6 months the family moved and I happened to see an ad for covid vaccinators in a hospital and thought it would be a way to get my foot in the door. After a few weeks I was made charge nurse of the large vax clinic (nearly all new grads)and I enjoyed the work a lot. Things slowed down considerably after most of the staff was vaxxed and I was offered a permanent position in occupational medicine, which I took I’m a few months into that now and miserable. It’s nearly all computer work, immunization status of new hires I so badly want a challenging job on a unit but don’t have the 1 yr acute care experience that every hospital (the one I’m currently at included) requires. Also I know that I cannot work nights. Does anybody out there have advice how I might proceed from here? Thanks so much for your time
