Care plan question

I have to do a case study during my L&D rotation and was wondering if there are any care plan books that have a section included in them for L&D.

My care plan book (Gulanik/Myers) does not have anything on L&D.

However, my nursing diagnosis book (Ackley & Ladwig) does have quite a number of diagnoses for labor, pregnancy, and delivery.

there are at least two care plan books on the market that are specifically about ob. this is one of them:

  • maternal/newborn plans of care: guidelines for individual care, 3rd edition, by marilynn e. doenges and mary frances moorhouse.

the actual nursing diagnoses that are used in the care plans are the same ones typically used in med/surg. as with any care planning, your assessment of the patient and knowledge of what is going on with the patient's body internally is what is going to determine your nursing diagnoses. there will also be breastfeeding, coping and bonding diagnoses that you will also be able to add that you probably haven't used before.

I have the Gulanik & Myers that's why I was wondering if others had a section related specifically to OB.

I know what NANDA's I'm going to use but I was just curious on how I should do the interventions and have them relate to OB.

Thanks for the suggestions I guess I'll be making a trip to Borders.

I just had to do a newborn careplan recently. My careplan book which is Sparks & Taylor has a section just for maternal and neonate. I found it real helpful.

Yeah I went and checked the care plan books at Borders out today. The had one book that was dedicated to OB and peds but it was almost $70 and I wasn't willing to spend that on one case study. I did skim through them though and the diagnoses, rationales, and interventions are pretty much the same things that I was using in the original care plan book I have. Only difference is no breast feeding care plans.

Thanks for the suggestions though because they didn't have the books mentioned so I will have to search for them and see if they might have what I need.

if you know what nursing diagnoses you are going to use, then you must (actually you have to) know what symptoms your patient has because your nursing diagnoses are dependant on the symptoms the patient is exhibiting. your nursing interventions are aimed at treating those symptoms. that is how they relate to ob.

if you are not clear as to what your patient's symptoms are, then you shouldn't even be considering nursing diagnoses yet. you have to follow the steps of the nursing process in a sequential manner or else your critical thinking gets faulty and you will make critical errors.

i should have reworded that. what i meant was i know which ones i want to use but i wanted to see if the objectives for those nanda's were the symptoms that my patient was experiencing.
