Calling any nurses in Melbourne

Hi all,

My husband and I are coming over to Melbourne from the 11th-17th June, this is an investagative visit with a view to emigrating next year. I have already received my nursing registration for Victoria, so I know I will be able to work.

What I would really like to do, is to meet up with someone nursing in Melbourne to have a chat and find out their opinion and differences of nursing in Melbourne and maybe organise an unofficial visit to a ward in a hospital to see what happens and what the atmosphere is like.

Any help would be really appreciated. I know this is a bit of a strange request, however it is such a huge move that I need to be sure I am making the right decision. In the UK I have become very disillusioned with nursing on the whole after only nearly 3 years but I don't want to waste my qualification, so this would be my last chance at making it work.

Thanks in advance,

Tanya

Hi,

Here are a couple of ideas;

Check out the posts on the irish-nurse post. https://allnurses.com/forums/f123/oz-div1-role-compared-irish-rgn-role-297335.html

send a message to the irish-nurse and see how she is finding it.

Check out the expat pommy websites to find out more about pommy's living in Melbourne, this is one site, but there are many http://britishexpats.com/resources/expats-around-the-world/australia/index.html

If you already know where you want to live in Melbourne you can contact the recruitment or human resource department of the larger healthcare networks to investigate employment options. Some of the larger public government hospital networks are:

http://www.southernhealth.com.au/

http://www.alfred.org.au/

http://www.easternhealth.org.au/

Some of the larger private/not for profit are:

http://www.cabrini.com.au/

http://www.epworth.org.au/

If you would like to do community based nursing then contact:

http://www.rdns.com.au/

Good luck

Hi Tanya - I work in Melbourne and would happy to meet up with you, show you around my ward, and introduce you to some other nurses if you like. Even if it's not for you it'll give you an idea.

Send me a PM if you're interested and I'll send you my email address, and we can take it from there. It is a huge change and I think you're wise to check it out before committing yourself fully :)
