Does your hospital have a policy on call exemption for surgery staff, based on age, service years, etc.? We've had a policy for years that offered exemption after age 55 but due to demands and lack of staff, the policy is being changed. Would appreciate any feedback.

The only exemption from call where I work is those who work only on weekends don't have to take call during the week. We sign up (or are assigned if not) 8hr blocks of call. We do have some who are willing to take extra call, and those who want to give it away usually can.

We don't have much call, and so our call time is basically voluntary, although everyone takes their turn. Some people do volunteer more, but even the people who don't like it take it sometimes.
There's no "official" exemptions, although people that only work days don't take it (retired nurses who have come back as casuals, charge nurses, resource nurses...)

our institution gives those or nurses who have been there at least 30 yrs exemption from call. we currently only have one in that category. there is no age limitation though for getting out of it!
