California and Distant Learning

If you aren't already an LVN, the only pre-licensure distance learning option left to you in California is Deaconess.

As far as prerequisites are concerned, there are quite a few DL schools that offer science classes with lab components, but it's best to see what your prospective school requires before starting to focus on that. The database at Excelsior (http://distancelearn.excelsior.edu) has a pretty comprehensive list.

Thanks I appreciate it. Will California except Deaconess education is the question now. If I get my nursing degree from them would it be excepted here in Cali?

I don't think DCN is accepted in CA, but the best thing to do is to call the BORN to find out for sure.

I did call and they just mentioned that there needs to be clinical time and they did not know much about the school. They questioned the clinicals and how would they be done. I would have to call and get info on that.

I don't see why CA wouldn't accept Deaconess. It's NLN accredited, and it has a substantial clinical component (if I understand correctly, you find a clinical preceptor in your local area.)

California has many requirements for clinicals, which EC couldn't fulfill, even though they are NLN accredited. This is why EC is no longer accepted. So it wouldn't be surprizing if DCN can't meet those requirements either.

I would be very surprised if DCN was not accepted in Ca. Aren't the issues that Ca has with EC related to clinicals? There are many hours of clinicals incorporated into DCN's program. However, Ca seems to do things differently so who knows how they would react to DCN.

Keep in mind that DCN and EC are two different animals. First and most importantly with DCN there are the clinicals, secondly, you are eligible for pn licensure once the first year is completed.

Just to name a few: You have to have state certified instructors, and the school has to have contracts with hospitals to conduct the clinicals. The clinicals have to be conducted concurrently with academic course work. The clinicals have to include various specialities which usually involve not one but several hospitals, since most hospitals don't have all of the specialties. (For example, my school has contracts with a dozen hospitals to cover all the required specialties.) And, if I'm not mistaken, you have to document at least 360 clinical hours supervised by the state certified instructors.

The state asked EC to meet these requirements and more, but they couldn't. Seems like it would be difficult for any distance learning program to meet all of those requirements but, once again, I could be wrong.

Well, I did a search for Deaconess on the Ca BORN website, and even though EC and other online programs, like the University of Phoenix, are mentioned, Deaconess isn't. If they are approved, you'd think they'd show up somewhere on the BORN website, like the other online programs. But maybe I'm missing something.

The only other thing I could find with a quick google search was a nursing resource site, but it only lists Deaconess for RN-BSN programs in CA. Still, Deaconess isn't on the BORN approved schools list, even for that.

Mona Please let me know more. I am interested in doing my course online and if there is a way to do I would love to. If you know of anyone online here that is in Cali and taking the Nursing course DCN please put me in contact with them. I would love to get advice from them on what to do and how I should go about it.

I would love to get that info.

Also does anyone know of any good LVN programes that may be online or that is in the evening in Southern California?
