I am graduating nursing school with a BSN this fall, and I have a strong passion for L&D/newborns. I absolutely want to go into L&D, any recommendations for getting a job as a new grad? I am making all attempts to complete my preceptorship in L&D, hoping and praying that may provide me an "in".
I also want to continue my education with the ultimate goal to be delivering babies :) I have looked at DNP and midwife programs, but I am unsure what my next step would be. I would enjoy more of the clinic-based care with clinic or hospital deliveries. I am located in Arizona, and I believe from the research I have done so far, there is no formal midwife program I have accepted that I will need to complete online education in another state. I have found a masters degree program at Georgetown University for NM/WHNP. Is anyone familiar with this program? I know the current recommendation is a doctoral degree for NP's. I am young and at the start of my career so I would much rather reach the termination of my education now, instead of needing to return to school once I have children and an established family.
I welcome all opinions and information :)

Where in Arizona do you live?
You should look into Frontier University. But consider that if you live in a smaller community that is not exactly midwife-friendly (coughPrescottcough), you may have to relocate in order to get your clinical experience.

What's stopping you from relocating to attend the graduate program of your choice (dreams)? Lots of people do. I can understand the people with established careers, kids in school, spouses with job, etc., saying they are limited to online education programs only because they can't relocate, but it doesn't sound like that is your situation. Why not have an adventure and attend a program you really want to attend?

Getting a preceptorship in L&D is good, but in case that doesn't work out make sure to get into a hospital system where you can start out on a different unit then within a year or two, you're able to put in a transfer to L&D.
Good luck!

Thanks for the info! I will look into that school. I live in the Phoenix area so hopefully I will have more opportunities :)
