BS to MSN

Hello,

I am a third year student at UC San Diego and I have recently decided that I want to be a nurse, rather than a doctor. I want to know if anyone could give me some information on how I could get my MSN after only recieving a BS and not a BSN. I know that UCSF and USD have this type of program, but are there any other options in CA??

Please help! I don't want to feel like my education at UCSD was a waste if I want to become a nurse now! Thank you!!!!

The programs that you are speaking of are what are called direct entry programs, they will grant the MSN when you are done, but it is what we call a generic MSN, and will not give you CNS or Advanced Practice credentials.

Some will include the BSN as part of the program and others will not. Each program can set their own requirements, best bet is to check directly with the programs that you are interested in.

They are designed for those that hold a Bachelor's degree in another field and will include the necessary classes that you would need to be able to sit for the NCLEX-RN exam.

The American Association of Colleges of Nursing releases a list of accelerated nursing programs nationally including those that grant a BSN and those that grant a MSN. The list can be found here: http://www.aacn.nche.edu/Education/pdf/APLIST.PDF. The BS to MSN programs are on the last page.

Like Suzanne said, you'll have to call or email the program directors in each school to find out requirements and whether the programs offer any specialty preparation at the Master's level.
