Hey!! I'm Oliver, from Spain, I toke my TOEFL test the last tuesday, and now I have to prepare the NCLEX test, I have no idea what book is better, If somebody could tell me what book is better, I would be thankfull, and maybe you guys also know if there are books for foreigns students.

Another question, what is the difference among LPN, CNS, CNA, CRNA, LVN and RN? I went to the University in Spain for 3 years, and I'm a registred nurse in my coutry but I don't know what is my degree here.

Thanks a lot!

hi oliver,

about the diferrence of:

lpn/lvn functions: assists with implementation of care;performs procedures; differentiates normal from abnormal;cares for stable patients with predictable conditions;has knowledge of asepsis and dressing changes;administers medications (varies with educational background and state nurse practice act).

example(s)

  • a 72 y.o. with diabetes who requires a dressing change for a stasis ulcer - stable patient with an expected outcome.
  • a patient with a chest tube who is ambulating in the hall - lpn/lvn can care for patient
  • a patient with a colostomy who requires assistance with a colostomy irrigation- assign to the lpn/lvn

unlicensed assistive personnel (uaps) - includes nurse aides, assistants, technicians, orderlies, nurse extenders; scope of nursing practice is limited

function(s) assist with direct patient care activities, bathing, transferring,

ambulating,feeding,toileting,obtaining vital signs/height/weight/intake/output, housekeeping,transporting,stocking supplies

example(s)

  • set up the patient's lunch tray- standard, unchanging procedure.
  • a 23 y.o.patient with a fracture of the right leg who asks to use the urinal- standard unchanging procedure; assign to the nursing assistant
  • a patient with a right-sided cerebral vascular accident (cva) who requires assistance with bathing- assign to a nursing assistant

registered nurse (rn) functions: determine nursing care required to meet clients' needs;take into account time required, complexity of activities, acuity of patient,, infection control issues. consider knowledge and abilities of staff members and decide which staff person is best able to provide care. give assignments to staff members(assign responsibility for total patient care; avoid assigning only procedures) provide additional help as needed.

example (s)

  • a 42 y.o. patient with cancer of the bone complaining of pain - requires assessment; rn is the appropriate caregiver
  • a 55y.o.patient with terminal cancer being transferred to hospice care- requires nursing judgment; rn is the appropriate caregiver
  • a patient who is refusing medication to treat cancer of the colon- requires the assessment skills of the rn.
  • listen to the patient's breath sounds- requires assessment; should be performed by rn
  • obtain a diet history- involves assessment; should be performed by rn
  • instruct the client on how to balance rest and activity- assessment and teaching required; should be performed by rn.
