Specialties Case Management

Hello! I am looking to find a non bedside job in nursing and came across a nurse telephonics case manager position. I was told I will be working from home after orientation. Does anyone have any experience with them? Do you like it? Is it stressful? I was hoping to use this job to bridge the gap to go into case management in a Hospita. Thanks!

Hi! Just curious if you are a new grad nurse? I've been in bedside for about 4 months and I'm learning real fast that bedside nursing is just not for me. Would love to get into case management to help out patients that way but not sure how to go about getting in with such little experience and only my ASN in nursing (I have a BS in Business Management). Wondering if I could follow your path with the nurse telephonics case management and transition to case management at the bedside in the hospital.

I talked to recruiters for Blue Cross that told me you needed experience before they'd consider you.

But it never hurts to try.

I'm not a new grad. I have a couple years of floor nursing.

Miiki- do you have experience with them??

I know 2 people who work for them and they enjoy their jobs. Blue Cross pays your benefits 100% as expected..

Do you happen to know what their day to day is like?

No I don't. Sorry.

I'm not sure what was meant above by BC paying benefits 100%. I worked for them and the health care plans were not terrific. I had to pay a portion of insurance costs as with most employers. I believe they have now eliminated traditional plans in favor of high deductible plans and HMO type plans only. Be sure to check that out. That being said, there are many different BC and Anthem divisions and things may not be the same among them all.

The day to day work of BC/Anthem case managers also varies greatly among these divisions. I didn't work there long because a job better suited to my goals came up for me but I have since learned that it can be hard to go from insurance case mgmt to hospital case mgmt. The opposite is not as hard. Think about it......the focus on getting a patient ready for discharge which starts on Day 1 while inpatient is very different from ongoing follow up with patients at home. Hospitals in my area are flooded with applications for case managers. I have found that they usually go with internal candidates or those with inpt case mgmt experience.

I will look forward to responses from other posters. This has been my experience but certainly may not apply everywhere.

Thank you for your reply. I have applied for case management in hospitals but have been told I don't qualify due to lack of "management" experience.

What kind if management experience? Like a unit manager? I don't see as that being critical to success in hospital case mgmt.

Each state is run separately, so they can have different benefits according to state.
