best way to get started

Published

I have no previous health care experience on my resume but would like to start working in a hospital setting asap- (Im in my thirties)- so that I can gain experience and possibly network while I go in school. ( I start in fall )

I'm not sure of the best way to proceed. do you have any recommendations on how to get my foot in the door? I just committed to volunteer work at a local hospital one day a week. Will this help me land a job? my resume? experience? Or is it hopeless to even consider getting a paid job in the field without yet having a certificate? I am so depressed thinking that I may have to continue work as an office manager for the next few years. :)

Thanks for your help!!

Check with your local hospital's human resources (recruiting) department. Many hospitals train you for positions such as patient care tech and NA. Usually, as long as you have already completed 1 semester of clinicals, you can get hired as a student nurse. That usually pays a little more than PCT. I would definately recommend you contacting each local hospital to find the best option for you. Also, check their website. Many hospitals have a website with a link designed especially for nursing students. They tend to have more individualized information about employment.

Good Luck

Have you looked into unit secretary positions? You won't have direct patient interaction, but you would be on the floors, interacting with nurses and other members of the health care team. I think it would be an interesting "bridge" experience. Also, as the other poster stated, usually after first semester of clinicals you can be hired as a nurse extern. In my state, too, first semester of clinicals will allow you to get your nursing assistant license, so you could do that afterwards.

thanks! your advice is much appreciated. have a good day!
