Best Resources

Veteran camp nurses...what have you found to be the best quick go to resources while at camp? Also, what phone apps have you found most helpful for a quick first aid and medicine reference?

I have been learning so much via the Camp Nurse threads!

OP - I'm guessing that you're a newbie. Am offering a bit of advice from an ancient one here. If that's your name and picture, you might want to change it. Social media has a way of following people when you might not want it to.

Also, invest in your future career by making sure you carry malpractice insurance. All nurses should ...

Good luck.

Thank you for the advice :) I have always carried insurance. It was one of the first things I learned in nursing school.

The basics of camp nursing is a good book. It has some basics about getting set up, and some tips and tricks. I would consider an EMT class if you have the time, usually two evenings a week for 6-8 weeks. Baring that I think the best thin is talking to nurses who have had your same position previously. It looks like our camps are pretty similar. I would be glad to talk if you like. Just pm me.

As far as your user name. I don't worry so much about that. While I don't use my full name I'm pretty easily identifiable, I don't go to lengths to hide my online identity. A side effect of this is that I don't say anything online I wouldn't say in person at work. AllNurses is not a vent space for me.

Thank you so much big al lpn! I also do not use social media to say anything that I would not want the world to be able to see. I will for sure be messaging you! I sure appreciate you reaching out! I am a psych nurse but also teach First Aid, etc. for the American Red Cross and of course have been refreshing on all of my skills I don't use as much now that I work in psych. I don't think that at this point I will have enough time to do an EMT class as I will be working a lot up until I leave which will be June 13th. I love to have resources at my fingertips but saw just how many apps were available for my Android and became a bit overwhelmed. I also just ordered a book on camp nursing which I have seen camp nurses mention in the threads. Thank you again for reaching out!! Now I just have to figure out how to private message you ;)

Well, it looks like I am not yet eligible to private message.

Welcome Wint. :) My favorite medical/nursing app is Epocrates. It tells you everything you need to know about any kind of medication including side effects and interactions. I used it quite a bit last summer and use it constantly during my clinical rotations and when studying. It's free to.

Sent you an email :)

Qx Calculate is also a good free app. It has a whole bunch of formula-type info organized by specialty (hem, onc, pedi, etc) explaining stuff like the rule of 9's for burns, and the Ottawa Ankle Index to help determine whether an ankle is sprained or fractured. I've found it to be the most helpful in hospital settings, clinics, and during my rotations for school, but there are a few good things in there for camp stuff too. Mainly the Ottawa Ankle Rules.
