Bed Bath and making the Occupied bed (skill exam)

Published

Question.....

When providing a bed bath and making the occupied bed...what is the correct order? All the videos I can find show how to provide a bed bath and how to make the occupied bed, but they don't show them happening together.

My instructor says change the linens after washing the back since the patient is already on their side...but then what about the peri care? When does that happen since it's supposed to be last. HELP

ok when they are on their side and you are washing their back, you are going to take off the linen on that side and put the new linen on (effectively "making" half of the bed) and then when the pt. rolls over to the other side, you remove all of the linens and finish "making" the other side of the bed with the fresh ones. Then you give peri-care.

Does that make sense?

Thats exactly how its done...take care into keeping the patient covered at all times as I am sure that is one of the things that your instructor will be looking for. The good thing about it is once you get your system down you will be able to perfectly execute this skill in less than 3 minutes. The bed making that is. Keep the bed raised at least to your waist level...prevents back strain. Peri care is ALWAYS last for obvious reasons. Good Luck!

Hello I was wondering where did you get the videos from. i am about to take this test in 3 hours and wanted something to freshen my memeory. the only videos i could find are on youtube and i cannot access them here on campus. please help/

The only comment that I would add is to wash thier back before changing the linens so that you do not get water on the clean linens. (But I use a lot of water).

Another trick that you never see is to do pericare when they are on thier back as you have better access to the anal area. For women, I like to have then bend thier top knee (or get my helper to lift the top leg) and slide the rag from front to back. This gets them really clean and is a lot easier then doing peri care while they are lying on thier back. Afterwards I am done with the bath and I am able to just make the bed and be done.

I would recommend "Mosby's Nursing Skill Videos" They are very helpful. Our instructors make us watch them in class sometimes.
