Bariatric Nursing

Published

Hello all,

I am going to applying to accelerated BSN programs this year and in the meantime I am in the process of finding a suitible/interesting nursing specialty. I have been thinking about about forensic, oncology (pediatric), case management, and bariatric nursing. I find bariatric nursing particularly interesting due to what I consider to be the obesity endemic to in the country in addition to the fact that I was a chubbo when I was younger. Does anyone have any insight into bariatric nursing particularily job responsibilities, pay, demand, negatives, etc?

Any help would be greatly appriciated.

Thanks

What aspect of bariatric nursing are you specifically interested in? I have worked on OR bariatric teams in the past, but I know there are opportunities for pre-surgical screening, dietary assistance, etc. You might get more responses if you are more specific.

Post op bariatric care is just that. Post op care with a specific care plan. Patients are in and out so fast these days, all we can do is follow the care map and hope that the patient is motivated once they leave to follow their programme.

Are you in interested in counselling? What exactly? Do you have a strong back? Even with the moving aides available today, far too many bariatric patients have issues other than their weight. Many have been coddled and enabled for so long by their families that they have some very challenging behaviours.
