Background Check

Had an interview today and a job offer contingent on my background check. Everything is clean except my credit. I lost my job 5 months ago and got behind on payments. Does anyone know if they take credit into account?

I've had a credit report as part of at least one job application, but no one ever made anything of it. At the time I don't think I had bad credit but I don't think I had the most perfect credit either.

I'd be very surprised if it mattered. What really matters is your CORI.

In the unfortunate event that it's an issue, there's probably other jobs that wouldn't have a credit check. I don't remember doing a credit report for every job I've applied to (and I've been through many app processes).

Thanks for responding. My criminal record is clean as a whistle, I've never even had a traffic ticket. So hopefully I get the job :)

I don't think it would matter for a cna job, if you were applying for vice president of an investment banking firm then it might be a problem.

Some CNA jobs do credit checks. They feel you will have access to social security numbers and pt personal info in charts. If you have bad credit, you *may* steal their identity. I do not agree with this rationing at all, BUT it exists. Bankruptcy is a public record anyway. Some background checks include bankruptcy because of this. (not that the OP mentioned being bankrupt, just adding this in as a side note)

That's dumb, not what you said but the whole thought that someone would steal someone's identity cause they have bad credit. Times are tough right now for some people, I myself have really bad credit and haven't been paying on my credit cards cause I don't have the money and will probably have to do bankruptcy. You would think someone who was an identity thief wouldn't have a problem with bad credit showing up on their background check, unless they were stealing identities of people with bad credit, and that would be extremely stupid and pointless.

I agree with you. Just because you have bad credit doesn't make you a thief. But I was told that some places check credit because they think you would be "more likely" to steal a pt's info (especially the elderly) if you are down on your luck money wise. Makes no sense to me, but somewhere people think there is logic to it. I guess the elderly in home care and nursing homes are considered easy targets.

Oh well, I guess the best I can do is just apply to places and see what happens, and try to explain things. If they don't hire me based on that, than there is not much you can do.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. If they only picked people with 800 credit scores, no one would get hired.

I have been a little worried about this subject as well, as I went through a divorce last year. I think Paws2People has a good point. Not everyone has an 800 credit score. Plus, our nation has been faced with harsh economical times the past five or six years. Good luck!

My background check came back and they offered me the job! They didn't even mention my credit report!
