My understanding is azithromycin I.V. is not recommended for infants under the age of 2months. Does this continue to be ? Also just wondering , if this continues to be the recommendation what is the reason?

We don't use it in our NICU...maybe try the peds board or PICU board. We tend to stick to the same standbys...Vanc, Gent, Cef, etc.

Hi there--I was told before by pharmacy that it is associated with profound deafness in neonates. I tried to search pubmed and found that it is ototoxic, but couldn't find anything related to neonates in particular.
Hope that helps!
I was put in this situation. After much interaction between people higher up then me , the antibiotic was changed. My concern is that it will come up again because one source said it was o.k. even though there were several that did not recommend it. The source I was told said it was o.k. is the Sanford Guide to Antimicrobial Therapy. My questian is how do you pick one source as the right one. And also I would like to know if anyone anywhere uses this med I.v. for infants and young children. We have never.
