I don't work in the field yet but I have also been applying to corrections in South Florida. I figured it'll be easier to get my foot in the door since not everyone is comfortable working in that kind of setting. Most new grads in this area only think of hospitals. I got a call back from one of the places I applied to and she said the salary was $27. To me that sounded reasonable compared to other places because where I'm at they are paying low 20's. I know someone working on a med surg only making $25 an hour and he has a year experience! Plus I heard with corrections there is a little wiggle room to negotiate pay. Look at glassdoor and indeed for the salary for your area. Hope this helps.

I recently left corrections after 7 years in a couple of jails. As an RN charge nurse, I was making $31/hr in the Tampa area. That pay may change depending on the average income of the specific geographic area though. This was a few dollars an hour more than I made as an ED nurse in a L2 Trauma Center for reference.

The corrections nurses in Illinois make 60-100 grand a year and that is without overtime. Illinois sucks but I was surprised to see the drastic difference. I want to move to Florida!
