Assessment time

How long do you spend doing your a.m. assessment? Half the time, I feel the previous shift leaves all the lines in a huge mess, and have to get everything straightened out plus do a thorough assessment on my patients. Sometimes, I think I can spend a good twenty or so minutes in one room at the beginning of the day doing all this. How about you?

Any tips on getting all the lines straight, transducers, etc?

Depends on a few things. How sick the pt is, how messy the lines are, and if I've had the pt before.

Sometimes it can be as little as 5 minutes, and can easily extend past 20.

Just depends on what's going on. I usually try to at least take a quick look at the one that is the least sick of the two just to make sure there are no pressing issues (sedation is about to be empty, make sure restrained, etc.) and then head back next door to the sick one and get things sorted out.
