ASN or BSN

Published

Im Currently going to school with the dream of being a Rn in a NICU. My only problem is in CT they offer several programs. I was just wondering does it make a big difference weather you have an ASN degree or a BSN as to what your salary would be? Several people tell me it makes no difference but i would like a nurses opinion. Please let me know. Thanks so much.:loveya:

Sienna, the salary differential between an ASN and BSN is very small, in in some cases non-existent.

If you have the time and money I would certainly consider going for the BSN. It opens up many more non-bedside opportunities to you after you have some experience.

The ADN and BSN are both routes that result in obtaining your RN status. RNs are typically paid based on their RN status and not their level of education - that being said BSNs are the more 'likely' (given two equal people) to be chosen for management.

I would look at the speed of getting into the work force combined with future options to get a BSN.

For example an ADN in two years allows you to start working (earning just as much as a BSN grad) and there are many hospitals that offer on site school, discounts, distance courses for nurses to work and do an ADN to BSN movement.

Therefore I believe it is counterintuitive to understand that the AND in many circumstances can provide the nurse with benefits that might outweigh the BSN - faster entry to work force, ability to get BSN as p/t paid degree, etc etc. Please note individual results will vary please consult yourself before taking ;)

with the way the world is going it is good that you get a higher degree.a lot of RNs have gone back to school for their BSN.i believe with the influx of nurses from the philliipines and around the world who already have their BSN ASN would soon be obsolete in the near future.if you can, go for the masters also. The may get the same amount now but in the near future the will not be.BSNs will get the job s and postions of importance which of course comes with higher pay.close your eyes and go for the BSN you will not regret it.
