This is proving more difficult than I expected and I was wondering if someone might be able to help. I am an American citizen who did all my basic schooling in NYC and then moved to Finland. Now I am about to finish up (no pun intended) a 3.5 year BSN course and want to apply for certification in New York.
As I understand it I need to apply to the CGFNS credentials verification service. They will process my application and send it to the NYS department of education. I also need to apply to the NYS board of nursing and then if I receive permission from them I will be allowed to take the NYCLEX. At least I think that's how it works.
It also seems that I will need to take a course in reporting and indentification of child abuse and well as a course in HIV infection. Do I need to take these before I apply to NYS? Since I still live in Finland I was hoping to come to New York to take the NYCLEX exam, but it appears that I will have to come twice at least?
If anyone can explain this better to me or offer any advice it would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance

take a deep breath and relax. :balloons:
now, do not submit the regular credentials verification form. you need to submit the special verification form for ny available thru cgfns. you must also apply to ny board of nursing for licensure. when they have received your documents from cgfns, they will send you a letter called an "att", 'authority to test.' until you get that letter, do not do anything else. once you have it, you can then make an appt with pearson-vue to schedule yourself for the nclex exam.
the two classes that you are so worried about can actually be done on-line at a cost of $15 each.
now go and have a great day............. :balloons:
if you have any more questions, please just post them........... :)
That was amazing! Not only did your reply come in under 15 minutes, but it really made my day! Thanks for that, and very insightfull in telling me to relax. I think I understand much better now. Just going to have to read the CGFNS application for NYS much more thoroughly to make sure I do everything right the first time.
Incidentally, might you be able to provide a link for the two course you mentioned I might be able to do online. I can't get the NYS application notarized unless I have completed the child abuse course anyway. Thought I might get a good jump on things if I managed to get those done. Thanks again!

If you go to the NYS board of nursing website, you will find a link to
those required classes. And you can narrow it down to on-line classes.
I just looked at the application (keep them at my office)....you do not need to have the classes done before having the form notarized. The form for CGFNS actually needs to be notarized also. Just take them to the US Embassy to get it done, both at the same time.
My students have never had the classes done before they sent the forms in, you can do that afterwards. Just as long as you have the proof.........
you will have months to get it done in............

Thanks again. Found the courses, registered and downladed the coursework. Looks interesting...
Months to do it, huh? I guess that means that 4-6 weeks for CGFNS to process my application is a lie. I was afraid of that. I was guessing somewhere around 3 months from the day I mail my application to NYS and CGFNS before I get permission to sit the NYCLEX. That sound about right to you as well?
Thanks again. You are a veritable fountain of information! Wonderful of you to share with us.

You do not send verification in like you do for the other programs for NY. You actually submit the application and form that allows CGFNS to obtain the documents in your name. So much of the time is dependent upon the mail system of both countries. I have had students of mine get their ATT letter in two months, but I have seen up to one year..........Mail system over here takes quite along time.
But look on the bright side :) , once you get your ATT letter and can sit for your exam, you have an answer in just a few days and a license and be ready to work......................... :balloons:
