Appointment question

Can a person get an appointment at a colon & rectal specialist because of hemmorhoids without getting referred by their family doctor?

Featured Replies

Depends on your insurance carrier and the physician. There are some specialists who will not treat non-referral patients and there are others that will. And some insurance companies will not pay a specialist without a referral and others will. Thus, it all depends.

It all depends on your insurance. If you have a PPO, most likely you can go to whomever you want without a referral from your primary, but each plan is different you will have to check. If you are self-pay then this is not an issue and I would think you could just call and make an appointment wherever you want to go have it checked out.
