Applying to BSN program! I need essay help! :)

Hi! :)

My name is China, and I am 19 years old with a 3.8 GPA. I am applying for fall admission to a BSN program in South Carolina, and I need to write an essay.

The essay topic sounds like this: "Explain your interest in pursuing a degree in nursing, past related experiences, and why you believe you are a good candidate for this profession."

Well, I want to be a nurse to help people, but that is primarily why anyone becomes a nurse, lol. I need to stand out. I want to introduce myself in the first paragraph, but I don't want it to sound awfully generic, like "My name is China, and I am...blah, blah, blahhhh".

Past related experiences would be going through a violent home invasion with my mom, who was injured. The emergency room nurses inspired me greatly. One in particular, who was so compassionate. I could see who I wanted to be in her. My grandmother was a nurse, and so is my aunt. I met a Navy nurse, which propelled me into wanting to be one as well. I have a family history of Navy, no nurses though.

I am compassionate, assertive, ambitious, and driven. I have worked my butt off to get my GPA.

Tips, please? :)

Sounds to me like you have a pretty good start by telling us what you have so far. Brainstorming is good. It is very difficult to introduce yourself without sounding generic, I know. Perhaps, you can write your essay like a story where you are introducing the audience to the character (you). Talk about yourself, your feelings, your drive, and desire in third-person. The things that inspire you the most and the difference your "character" wants to make in the lives of others...how nursing is the vehicle you have chosen because of your life experience and the people who have inspired and touched your life...be descriptive, colorful, and end your story with a deep profound statement that ties it all together and makes the reader say, "Wow, what a girl!" You can give it a go, and if it doesn't turn out good you can chuck it and start over. Just start writing and edit and revise later. I would be honored if you will let me read your essay before you send it, and I will give you my feedback. I took expository writing in college and made and A. I'll help if I can.

Thank you so very much! I would love for you to give me feedback! I am writing my essay now, and when I was brainstorming I felt like I was doing well, but now that I am actually writing it I feel so nervous. :/

We all feel that way when the writing is in process. Don't fret...you'll do great. You can email your rough draft to me at [email protected]

Are there any other ideas for the essay? I am worried I will sound pompous if I write in third person, or that they will think I cannot follow directions lol or maybe they won't...maybe it will be different, and they will be left with a good impression. I am not sure! lol

Write one traditionally, and the other narratively. Ask friends, family, fellow students and/or co-workers for their opinions. Go with the one that answers all the questions and leaves the person most impressed with your creativity and ability to follow directions. I will give you my honest impression, and I am sure you know some people who will also. I know this is important to you, which is why it is wracking your nerves. I think many people are so serious that they forget to relax and have fun with the assignment. It is okay to show your personality and have fun with the assignment as long as they get the information they need and you stand out as an excellent candidate.
