Hi - I am applying for ABSN programs. Unfortunately a few years ago I received an owi in WI (I had pot in my system, not alcohol....not that it matters). I have been told it can affect clinical placement and being able to take the NCLEX exam/get nursing license. My plan is to be up front about this when I apply to schools. Is this the direction I should go? I know that most nursing schools require a a background check at some point in the program? I would hate to go through nursing school and put in all the hard work/money, only ending up not being able to get a nursing license b/c of my mistake from the past. Thanks for any advice out there!

1. Check with the school - you are right in that the school might accept you but clinical placement might be an issue
2. Contact the BON anonymously to ask about it - I would doubt one OWI would stop you from taking the NCLEX. However, some states might require a monitoring contract.
Thank you for your reply, I will definitely contact the BON.
