Anyone applying to the Basic BSN Program at UM Fall 2009??

Hey everyone,

I will be applying to the school of Nursing at University of Miami for Fall 2009. I need to complete my current courses at FIU and about 3 courses in the summer to finish up the pre-reqs for UM. Just wondering if anyone else is applying/considering the Basic BSN program at UM? Did any of you attend the information session that was on Jan. 13th? Anyone spoken to Yenisey Cabrera (the nursing advisor)? Are there any current students from the Basic program? How is it?

Thanks in advance!

Thank you! Good luck in FIU. I took all the classes i need for FIU and did not even apply. They really discourage you there. When do u find out if u got in?

Hey Carygt3,

Well I didn't apply to FIU because their program is four years which is too long;however, I applied to MDC and I still have to take the entrance exam before September 1st just the reading portion. We'll see what happens.

Thanks :). But yeah, they can be discouraging..I was told that about 160 students were applying, while there are only 50 seats to fill. I believe I will find out end of may to around june.

Oh well yes, if you don't have an AA or the pre-reqs done, then it is technically 4 years in total. Which exam do you have to take? CPT, TABE, TEAS?

So its less than four years if I have all the Pre-Reqs done?? I have my Bachelors in Biology from Barry University, I have all the pre-reqs out of the way. I have to take the cpt reading portion for Miami Dade College.

Since you have a previous degree, ithink you comply with all the pre-reqs taht FIU requires, except maybe the intercultural communications and intro to nursing classes.

Look i found this in the FAQ:

I am an applicant who has a previous baccalaureate degree (not in nursing). Am I required to meet the FIU’s core curriculum, Gordon rule, and CLAST (the general education requirements)?

No.

Take a look at the site:

http://cnhs.fiu.edu/nursing/undergraduate_basic_admission.html

So technically..you will be applying straight to the nursing school part of the degree which is 2 years.

I suggest you make an advising appointment with Ramiro Lopez (he's our nursing advisor) in the Nursing Dept. Here is the number/location:

HLS 2 Room 485 University Park Campus

(305) 348-7703

:)

Well this is very good news!!! I will definitely set up an appointment with him. Thank you for finding out this information. I will keep you updated.

Hey everyone! I just got a packet in the mail and I was accepted to UM's Accelerated BSN for Fall 2009. Did anyone else get in?

Hello:

I read that you applied for Um fall2009. So did I. I am actually accepted into the program, hope that you are too!!! Well, hope we can make friends since we are probably gonna be in the asme class.

By the way have you get the packet from the Shcoll of nursing yet????!!!!

Thanks GatorCane, but if you are entering the accelerated program then you started in the summer right?? I thought UM's fall program is only regular (meaning 4 semesters instead of 3, as the accelerated) Anyhow Thanks a lot for your feedback!!!!!!!!

I don't want to discourage anyone but back in April of 2007 UM's Nursing program was placed on probation by the State of Florida Board of Nursing "due to low scores on the State Exam and cheating issues"

The article states the UM was required to follow a self improvement plan and to report to the State Nursing board every 6 months for up to 2 years.

"Nursing schools are in risk of probation after their student's passing rate on the boards fall by more than 10% below the National Average" ( " Nursing School's Probation status a Surprise"( Miami Heral 4/18/2007)

I would believe that UM President Donna Shalala ( former Secretary of Health and Human Services) has made sure that the problems are being addressed and resolved by now. I have great respect for what she has accomplished during her tenure as the head of UM... ( Miller school of Med and UM hospital)

If you are going to invest $33k a year make sure that the school you are attending will teach you the skills necessary to pass your boards.

Hope that helps.
