I will try to make this brief but am wondering if anyone has ever heard of this. My coworker started having vertigo 4 weeks ago then progressed into left arm ataxia, garbled speech, headaches, listing gait to the left, and unclear thought processes, double vision and a few more sx. She saw a neuro and had an MRI. Small lesions were found on the right side of her brain base at level C-2. She was told initially it could be blood clot, MS, abcess or tumor.
After 1 day of nafcil q 6*, rocephin 2 gms q 24, and metronidazole 500 mg q 8* she became clear headed and her speech became clear. She was transferred from our facility to a much larger facility for further evaluation. The neuro and internist think it is a brain infection she picked up at work and are culturing her csf.
Has anyone ever heard of this?

No, but I wish your friend a complete and speedy recovery.
Getting a brain infection at work- nursing gets more scary all the time.

I know of a fungal brain infection...not a personal aquaintance. I wouldn't wish that on anyone. If headaches develop, its hard to deal with b/c the docs don't want to medicinally alter LOC...they treated her like head trauma.
I hope she makes a full recovery and does so quickly.
