SOrry I have to ask here. its because the practice questions im doing dont have rationales so i am left to figure them out myself.
So, long story short...
parents with 2 children with sickle cell disease ask the nurse why both children have the disease.
the answer: each child has 25% chance to inherit the trait from both parents..
i thought it was 50% to inherit the trait and 25% to inherit the disease...

Children with sickle cell disease = SS (one in four, or 25 percent)
Children who are carriers of the gene like their parents = AS SA (two in four, or 50 percent have "sickle cell trait")
Children who do not get the gene from either parent: AA (one in four, or 25 percent)
PS.: This is just for one child. so based on your question it means both kids are SS
The problem with your question is that you didnt specify whether the parent has the trait or the disease. However, I used punnett square to predict the answer above and I assumed the question says both parent have sickle cell trait.
the question didnt have that detail. i think it was just a problem with the way it was made or written.
i do understand now. thanks for the picture @loveofrn!

It is a 25% chance to inherit the trait from BOTH parents, two copies of the trait = disease. There is a 50% chance that each child will inherit the trait from one parent and be a carrier and a 25% chance that the child will not inherit the trait.
Oh Thank you! The answer i was really looking for!!
Its not just critical thinking in nursing. You apparently have to be good in english grammar and stuff. lol
