Be sure to talk to your supervisor about your goals & enlist her/his aid. Most people really enjoy acting as a professional mentor. Get involved in some 'extra-curricular' activities such as committees, task forces and such. Volunteers are always welcome. Identify something that you would like to change - maybe a policy that needs updating or an improvement in the way the break room is organized - and offer to take this on.
The first step in becoming an effective leader is to adopt an attitude of "ownership" and assume responsibility for making changes rather than assuming someone else will do it. The most powerful leaders in any group are those that are the most influential - and this is very seldom the "boss". Authentic leadership has nothing to do with formal titles or authority.

And don't always wait for someone to ask if you want to be involved in these activities. Take the initiative and contact them first.
