Advice on CMV

Hi All!!

I have 2 diagnosed CMV kiddos in my school. And I have teachers panicking!

There isn’t anything to do about it aside from just being diligent with our hand washing and sanitizing toys/tables/counters etc, and not sharing utensils!

We have had 2 meetings about this. Developed plans, but now this teacher has decided that we have to do more or what not because they don’t feel it’s safe for them or other students.

Im pretty lackadaisical about it because it’s something that doesn’t affect you unless your pregnant (more for the fetus) or immunocompromised (none of which this classroom is experiencing)..

how or what can I do to help them better understand this, how or what can I do to make them more comfortable with this!?

We can’t kick these kids out of school because we KNOW they have it. Imagine all the kids that have it but don’t know it! Or all the adults that have it but don’t know it!?

This sounds like a job for education more than anything else. Is the teacher pregnant and not telling anyone? Or have a weakened immune system due to an illness that she does not want to disclose? Perhaps and one on one meeting with that teacher to tell her you understand her concerns, but once again reiterate that unless she falls into one of the above categories, there is no risk to her. Once again explain transmission (body fluids) and once again explain little to no risk in otherwise healthy adults. Sometimes I feel like we need to lather rinse repeat with the teachers.

So, I was a school nurse in a preschool setting where this was also an issue. I devoted a portion of our professional development to the topic because of it. I explained how it was spread and that most of us have already been exposed. It’s just like any other virus. I told my teachers not to lick the kid or drink from his sippy cup and they should be fine.

If she’s that worried, she can go to her doctor and have her titers drawn to see is she’s immune. Then maybe she’ll feel better.
