Advice About Working While In Nursing School

Published

Hello Everyone,

I am just curious to hear about success stories of anyone who has worked full-time and successfully passed the nursing program. I need some advice and help from others...:up:

What shall I do...HELP!!:scrying::no:

I just wanted to caution about working and letting your school faculty or administration know that you are doing this. I have met several people who worked in spite of the admonition "don't work while in nursing school", myself included, who have met with discriminatory treatment at school. One of my former supervisors failed out of nursing school and was told that she should not have been working. She rearranged her work schedule before she went back to school, told her advisor (the person who told her she failed because of working) that she had taken her advice and was not working, then went on her merry way to graduate without letting anyone at the school know that she had kept her job. I was told often that working was not a good idea. So much that I believe that they were in effect telling me that working was a good reason to criticize me. I just believe, from my own experience and from listening to others, that it is a better idea all the way around, to keep your personal circumstances to yourself as much as possible. You never know what is really in the back of the minds of the people who control your presence in school. I wouldn't make this statement had I not experienced this myself and spoken to others in school who wondered about how things were being handled. All this being said, there is no reason why you can't work and go to school simultaneously. You must start out well organized and maintain yourself as you go. It is doable. Just be quiet about your schedule and meet the school requirements as you progress. It is nobody's business that you hold a job or take care of three children in your "spare" time.

i have had a completely different circumstance at my school. i just finished micro and start nursing concepts tomorrow, not only is the school supportive but my job is as well. i guess it depends on what school you go to. my school does night classes specifically for people who work during the day. 90% of the students attending my school work and have no problems passing. and might i add, my ADN program is eccelerated

What is Eccelerated? lol

I'm in an ADN program (not ecclerated,lol) I don't work, but I would say the majority of students do, and many of them are suffering because of it. But some people are forced to work, and they do the best they can.

accelerated is faster. ex: instead of 16 week long classes, my classes are all 5 weeks long. so i had to take a&pI, A&PII, micro & nurtrition and each class was only 5 weeks.

I was only kidding!! We all knew you made an accidental typo.

It sounds like we may be attending the same school. Your schedule & time frame sounds like mine. :wink2:

I was told too, going into my nursing program, that working was kind of looked down on. Right before I started, I quit my job and moved back home just so I didn't have to work.

Although now I've got an interview on Tuesday, just for work on Fri & Sat nights and Sun mornings.

There are alot of students I go to class with that work, have kids, and go to school all at the same time. While I think it's better to not have to work as much, I do think it's manageable.
