ADN Program at ACC

Hello,

I was just wondering if anyone on the boards is currently in the ADN program or graduated the program from ACC and how do/did you like it? I have heard some really good things about the nursing program at ACC. My only concern is that is looks like it is very hard to get in the program. Are there any other colleges in the Austin area that I should consider that maybe aren't as competitive or are the schools really hard to get into?

I would like to go back to school and hoping to register for some of the prerequisite courses this summer. I graduated high school in 1993 and have been out of school since 1996. I'm a mother of 3 kiddos ages 3, 4.5 and 6.5. My husband and I moved to Texas 2 years ago from Canada. We really like it here. I have also been a Doula for 6 years and worked as a Postpartum Caregiver at the local birth center. I apprenticed with a local home birth midwife for 9 months. In the last 2 years, I have been to many births and learned many valuable skills.

I appreciate any info you can pass along.

I graduated from ACC ADN program in 1998. It has ups and downs, of course, but it is an excellent program. If you can make it through the program, you are almost guaranteed to pass NCLEX.

There is quite a wait to get in. You can work on your co-requisites and pre-requisites while waiting.

Calling it a 2-year program is a laugh. Including the co- and pre-reqs, it is more like 3 yrs. And I understand they do a lot of the classroom work on-line now, rather than sitting in a classroom. Wish we had done that. Would have saved me a lot of driving!

I've heard the nursing schools in San Antonio (UT Med School in SA) and also Killeen are good. Know some people got tired of waiting for ACC and went there--generally the young, single ones.

I'm also at ACC right now finishing prereqs so that I can transfer to a BSN program in the fall. I considered ACC's nursing program at one time, but once I saw all of the criteria needed just to apply, I was like "forget that". I figured with the time I would spend finishing the prereqs for ACC, I could apply to the BSN and most likely finish in the same amount of time or less as I would at ACC.

At any rate, like osborncs said, there are schools in San Antonio that offer ADN and BSN degrees:
