admitting in ltc

Published

I have a question abut admitting pts to ltc from hospital.

We have a new Dr on the medicare /rehab unit where I work.

Don and Adon and even the Dr have said when admits come from the hospital where he works that we don't have to call him to verify admission orders.

I call anyways and above mentioned people are unhappy with me r/t calling. There is nothing in writing to support the don't call to verify position, what would you do ? Is this legal?

Is it possible I am just paranoid ?

I feel really exposed and vulnerable. :imbar

I normally still call. Sometimes the d/c orders are written early in the am or the day before...things change.

There is the old addage in Nursing, "If it isn't written down, it wasn't done!" As far as I'm concerned that applies to Dr's orders too. If Dr doesn't want to be called for admits then he should put standing orders in place to cover the situation...Otherwise, I'm calling him! I've seen to many orders changed between discharge from the hospital to admittance to my LTC Unit. Stick to your guns, if something goes wrong and you don't have written documentation proving Dr's orders then you own the problem!
