Does anyone know if critical care experience as an acute care nurse practitioner will count toward the 1 year ICU experience needed for CRNA school? You kinda think that it would, but it is probably not as hands on with the vasoactive drips, etc.. Any insight would be great.
Thanks, SC

Good question. Sounds reasonable to expect that it might be favorably considered, IMHO, but the only way to know for sure would be to query the specific program(s) directly.

Along a similar line, is there a post-master's option for CRNA school if you've already got, say an ACNP? I'm just thinking down the road...my local school has an RN-to-MSN program where I can bypass completing my BSN and go straight for my MSN. I can complete that program part-time while I'm working.
If I already had my ACNP, would it lighten what I'd have to do to complete CRNA school (since I'd have all the basic MSN stuff out of the way)? The biggest obstacle for me is 2 years with NO income (we can't live off my wife's alone...). I wondered if I already had an ACNP would it lighten the classload for CRNA and let me pick up a few shifts as an NP in an ER for example? (more money/hour might make even a very part time/prn gig helpful)
Sorry to hijack the thread, I hope it's at least similar (and maybe helpful to the OP as well).

I don't know about other programs, but mine is not an MSN, it is an MS in nurse anesthesia (no nursing theory classes). So if you were to enter my program you would start at the beginning with everyone else. There is actually a girl in my class that just comepleted her NP. I personally don't know of any program that significatnly shorten the program based upon having an NP. Definitely contact the programs you're interested in and find out for sure.

Bryan... I'm in a similar position as you. I am currently in a FNP program with a graduation date of 12/08. I'm now working in a Neuro ICU, and find that perhaps CRNA would be the perfect path for me. So I've looked at some schools that are nearby regarding post-master's work. Turns out that some offer it, some don't. The ones that do typically accept your Adv. Health Assessment, Pathophysiology, and Pharmacology. Others will also take your Research class. These essentially cut down on the number of courses you would have to take. It may not eliminate the total number of years, but it will ease up your semesters quite a bit.
If you have any specific questions just pm me. I'd be happy to talk to you about it since we have similar goals. And I'd hate to hijack this thread any further. :)

that's a tough one and probably program specific. the AANA requires actual RN experience. i do agree that your experience/education in disease process will help, but the education i feel is quite indepth in the pharm and phys (and anes) in CRNA programs. more so than NP. again, my experience.
