Accusations are demoralizing :-(

Working as an LPN w/ long and short term patients I report to a Supervising RN, when ABN labs come in or a COC happens, sometimes I get told we, the LPN's, are not passing the meds or making sure the patient gets fluids, it's not an accusation outright, but they say it. Seriously? No formal accusations are being made but getting told this each time is now demoralizing. You're on the phone w/ the doctor both wondering why this is happening despite all the orders being carried out, but when you mention it to your RN Super, that's what you hear, you guys must not be administering what's ordered. Gets worse when the DON says the same thing. Patients are alert, but to the RN/DON I guess there's no other reason for these things to happen, 'cetp to say the LPNs are not doing their job ?. Breaking your back, behind schedule trying to order more labs, carry out new orders and that's what you hear? I totally feel like leaving b/c of this.

I'm sorry your in this situation, I'm sure you aren't solely at fault. There does seem to be a major systemic issue in your facility though if things are very routinely being ordered but not actually done, because (assuming the orders aren't dangerous) that really needs to happen.

I'd recommend talking to your supervisor or DON to see if some system can be implemented that fixes the problem. Maybe something implemented into your charting software, or a CRM policy.

Don't make the mistake of assuming something is about you and then choosing to take it personally.

If you need help changing your thought process, go ahead and ask for clarification when these statements are made to you. Such as, "Are you referring to me, or someone else?"

It has been my experience that when supervisors have this attitude it is because they want to continue to blame the nurse/staff because that way they do not have to take responsibility and change the environment. That would cost money that they either don't have  or don't want to spend.  Either way it sucks but it is like that in most places, some worse than others. Just do what you can and don't worry about it, don't take it to heart, don't take it personally because it is not personal. Nurses (RN and LVN) are working harder with less everywhere. If they are not directly speaking to you just ignore, if they ask directly I would say something like...of course I am giving what is ordered..and leave it at that. don't speak for the other LPNs, just yourself. Good luck!
