Accreditation frustration

Published

I'm currently a nursing student(RN) in Florida. I've been trying to get a job as a nurse extern, but have been turned down by all. They told me my school isn't accredited. It's approved though. Before I signed up, I was told that we were accredited. Where would I be able to work once I become a nurse? This is so discouraging.

Approved by the Board of Nursing and being accredited are two different things. Schools have to be approved by the state's board of nursing in order for graduates to be able to take the NCLEX, accreditation is done by an national organization. Are you sure they said they are accredited? Did they tell you by which organization?

If your school is accredited by any agency it's going to be somewhere on your school's website. That's not something to hide, it's something to brag about, so shouldn't be hard to find. If it isn't there, it doesn't matter what you think someone told you.

Unfortunately your options may be pretty limited, some employers won't take graduates of programs that don't have regional or national accreditation. You're going to have to go the extra mile to find one that does :(

I know someone who went to a for profit school and tried to convince her not to go because just because they're regionally accredited doesn't mean they're nationally accredited... I'm not sure about the true technicalities of it all. Long story short, hospitals won't hire her because the school she went to isn't nationally accredited.
