Wow, so I've been a nurse a little over a year now. I have to say that it is the hardest physical labor job I've ever had in my life and I worked fast food for years and thought that was tough on the body...oh no, nursing is tough!
I think we are often under appreciated, almost always overworked and sometimes just plain poopoo'ed on but at the end of the day if we are lucky we will have a patient or family member that says how much they appreciate us. And that seems to make a lot of the previous stuff go away.
I have to say for me I feel blessed b/c I was able to go into my specialty without med surg and while I do think I'd have much more practice in my clinical skills with med surg I'm still thankful for being where I am, I wanted to do this and knew from the start but I do think its wise to do med surg first if you can. I did a brief period of it but it was in peds so it was still different.
For those of you out there wanting to give up, trust me, I think most of us feel that way at some time. I sure did and sometimes do but its better. I'm now going to school to get an advanced degree so one day I can teach but I still am learning something every day. I am sure there is much more to learn on this journey!
