Congratulations! What do you want to do with your NP? That should point you in a good direction. I actually work in a large nephrology practice and with your dialysis experience, that might be a good direction, if you like it. I wish that I had had some dialysis exp before I took this job. It would have helped tremendously.

This is just my opinion... I think ER will give you a more broad perspective of various disease presentations and treatment protocols. It will also train you to prioritize and think fast in your head which patients are sicker and need prompt attention. Many patients present to the ER with complaints a primary care doc can easily treat in the clinic. I realize that you are going for ANP so you will not really need the peds exposure in the ER.

Another option is General Med-Surg. You'll get to see a variety of chronic and acute adult medical conditions or Internal Medicine type patients and will get to experience how treatments are carried out on these patients. I think ICU's might be a little too specilaized but can be an option as long as it is a general MICU. Adult home health care is also another option. There is some degree of autonomy for nurses in home care that can benefit your future role as ANP.

Again, the above are just suggestions if you want to broaden your background as a nurse and make yourself open to whatever specialty comes your way after you graduate. There are some NP students who have focused experience in a specialty (such as yourself who have LTC and dialysis experience) who tend to seek out jobs in their field of experience when they graduate. That would be fine if that specialty is available for an NP position when you finish your degree. For the most part, I think the best approach is to broaden your skills and make yourself more marketable.
