A&P

Published

Hi, I've read a lot of threads that discuss A&P apprehension during Pre-Reqs. I'm going to post my story and welcome others to do likewise. I hope this thread will serve to motivate anyone who is psyched out over having to take this class.

First thing, I'm older than a lot of folks here. This is relevant only because I took Biology way back in the 80's. When I went to the school last year to enroll in A&P the lady pulled up my name on the computer and proceeded to explain to me why she couldn't enroll me into A&P and A&P lab. She said it was because Biology was a pre-req. After she smugly gave me the bad news, I told her she needed to check my transcript because I had indeed taken Biology, albeit a long time ago. Turns out the computer only tracked back so far but when she pulled my transcript, there it was... Biology, a "B" in lecture and an "A" in lab. By this time the lady sitting next to us enrolling students asked her if there was a problem, I guess over hearing our conversation up to that point. She said "No, he hasn't had Biology since 1985 but I'm putting him into the A&P class anyway". Both of them kind of snickered at the notion I might have a snowballs chance in Hattie to pass. I left there wondering what I got myself into but now motivated more than ever to pass.... if for no other reason than to show them they were wrong. I got my book, enrolled in the MacGraw Hill program online (yes, I did it online) and was all set to start strong and get ahead of the curve. Then life happened, my mom who had been battling lung cancer for five years went into the hospital and passed away three days later. This was the first week of the semester. The instructor gave me until midterm to catch up since my first two weeks were occupied with moms passing, planning the funeral, and the burial. I did get caught up by midterm. The MacGraw Hill program was brutal, I literally had a couple hundred questions to research and answer every week. I told myself that from midterm forward, I'm getting ahead and staying there. Midterm fell right before Spring Break. My instructor went on spring break having entered the wrong year on the due dates rendering it impossible to submit assignments. When he returned he apologized for his mistake and gave us to the end of the semester to get caught up... once again I was a solid week behind with a mountain of research and reading ahead of me.... plus hundreds of questions that had to be answered for a grade. I did catch up but it left me with little time to study for the Finals.

Long story short, I spent many nights to 0200 studying. I thought about giving up, withdrawing... I thought who could blame me after all the hurdles. However two things kept me going, one was knowing my mom would have wanted me to finish, and the other was those two ladies laughing at me for enrolling in the first place.

Oh yea, I got an "A" in both lecture and lab. Now I ask, what will be your motivation?

That's awesome! Congrats on your "A"!

Thanks! hope my thread didn't sound like bragging. (even though I'm happy I passed) Just wanted to share and possibly help motivate people who haven't taken A&P yet. Hopefully more people will share their experiences as well :-)

Thanks for the reply. The whole intended purpose of my post was to provide motivation for anyone who, like myself, was struggling to get through the class. It makes me feel good to get feedback from people saying it helped motivate or inspire them. Good Luck with all of your classes :)
