I am just curious if there any diffrences with working at VA?? Could anyone share any advice or knowledge on it? I'm a new nurse and I have had clinicals in all types of facilities but have no idea what to expect from military. Is it basically the same? Idk why I have a picture in my head of it being SO strict and militant and everyone being extra smart. Idk if that's the best environment for a new nurse... I'm sure I'm gona look pretty stupid. To them if that's the case! Lll:nailbiting:. Please share info! Experience! Anything?!?

I have friends that work there and love it! (and one of them is NOT super smart). The patient population is older, and you aren't likely to find L&D or Peds. I think it's difficult to get hired unless you have done your clinicals there (at least in my area). Federal benefits are awesome and where I am, it pays almost $10 an hour more than anywhere else. From what I hear you will be less likely to be called off due to low census.

Where I am, they have a program that you apply for in junior year and if you are chosen, you do all clinicals at VA except OB and peds. After you pass NCLEX, you are guaranteed a job. Not sure if that's a nationwide program or not.

Their new grad program has a longer orientation than private facilities (which is good) but they treat it a little like school in that you have projects that you have to hand in during orientation. Also, working for federal govt means you are less likely to get laid off and you really have to mess up badly to get fired, so job security is better.
