I was recently offered a position as an RN at a pediatric office. They offered me $25/hr. It seems like a decent place to work but it is also about a 65 minute commute and they desire a minimum 2 year commitment. As a new RN with an associates degree, and continuing my education in a BS program, I am trying to be open to taking any position for experience. But I am not sure if taking a job in a doctors office will limit and hurt me in the long run as a RN. Does anyone have any advice for me?

What are your long term goals? Do you want to work in pediatrics? Do you want to work in an MDs office? It all depends on what type of nursing you want to do. Two years is quite the commitment, but new grad ADN jobs in the hospital can be hard to come by depending on where you love. I'm sure you know all of this already.

I agree, it really depends on where you want to be long term. $25/hr is not a lot of money for a RN though. I made more than that as a LPN. Is this the first place you've pursued?

My ultimate goal is to do community health and emergency care/triage in third world countries or for underprivileged populations in poor communities. This job does provide the opportunity to teach, perform triage, assist doctors in emergency care surgeries, some IV therapy, perform assessments, give immunizations, paperwork, and even some house calls. Because the office is located in a isolated area it serves as an emergency-like room for children. I think it would be great but it is also 1 hour commute (1 way) and its on the lower pay scale. Yes two years is quite a commitment. The doctor expressed that as her desire but she said they do not have a contract of sorts so I am "technically" not required to stay that long. It is the first place I have pursued. I have applied to other places as well but yes it is true that most hospitals do not take new grad with ADN. Thank you for responding and trying to help me out!

I would say take the job.. It is hard for anyone especially new grads to find a RN job. Stay in the position for 6 months to a year in the job and then move on to the area you like. Experience beats anything. It will keep you well rounded, open you up to more opportunities and prepare you to work in Community Health field. I say go for it girl... Let us know what you decide.

Also, $25/hr is not alot for a RN but think about the increase in pay for your future jobs. Everyone has to start low before they get high pay
