Interesting. Wonder how that move on U Portland's part will impact the region? the entire west coast from Washington State to California is riddled with Nursing Master's entry programs for candidates with non-nursing degrees and majority do not grant a BSN in the process.

It seems their NonRN to MSN program has hit a snag. The students can't find jobs while in the grad part because they doon't have BSN's. School has halted addmision while working on the issue.

*** I doubt the lack of BSNs has anything to do with it. I know my hospital simply will not even consider hiring people in such programs and it has nothing to do with the lack of a BSN. Why would a hospital want to hire a brand new nurse who they KNOW, by the very nature of the program they are in will leave their staff job as soon as they finish 1-3 years?). What hospital is going to make the huge investment in training a new grad who they know for sure will leave as soon as they become usefull to the unit?

At least they are looking at it. There has been lots of discusion here about the topic over the years. I know a couple from highly reguarded programs that couldn't get work or when they did, the pay was sig less than the pre RN hires.

Just another example of fragmentation in our education base. I'd like to see their completed program hire stats to see if that is playing a role in this current problem of theirs.

There are 18 board-approved Master's entry programs in nursing in California alone!

Hmmmm...I have also heard of this happening to BSN-DNP students. The program that I'm in are in the process of getting us Master's Degrees for an unknown reason. If you have a Doctorate, then why would we be required to have a Masters?
