Hi everyone. I am a aspiring nurse and I have a pharmacology question. If a pt have 1 cup of milk, 2 cups of tea, 1/2 cup of gelatin, 1/2 cup of soup, and 1/4 quart of water. How many ounces did they get? I know 1oz=30ml and 1 cup=240 ml. I am confused on 1/2 and 1/4. Could you tell me how to add this up. I am getting ready to start nursing school and I want to understand everything.

if 1 cup = 8 oz and 1 quart has 4 cups, then the rest should be simple...remember you are finding ounces, not milliliters.

Milk = 240 cc

Tea = 480 cc ( 240 x 2)

Gelatin = 120 cc ( half of 240 cc)

Soup = 120 cc ( half of 240 cc)

Water = 60 cc ( 1/4 of 240 cc)

Total = 1020 cc

1. This is not a pharmacology question it is a math question.

2. If you know a cup is 240 ml, then what is difficult about figuring out what half of that is?

3. xtxrn - the question actually asks how many ounces - not how many cc (ie: ml). Although I realize that a true medical question would have asked how many mls they received.

4. xtxrn - I think your water calculation is incorrect.

5. OP - You need to think this out and come up with the correct answer. It really isn't hard.

xtxrn- your math is wrong and so are your units, OP said the question is looking for ounces and that the pt consumed 1/4 QUART of water (not a cup) so your number should be 240cc of water (or 8oz). If you fix your math and then divide by 30, then you will have the correct answer. :) have to add a smiley so i don't sound snarky

This is one of those questions that you have to be able to know which of the values given affect the answer and pay very close attn to the units. For instance in the question, there is no request for or mention of mL, so you don't even need to think about that unit. All you need to know is that 1c=8oz and 4c=1quart. The rest is simple from there, with basic fractions and addition. You can do it! Just make sure you're reading the question VERY carefully, with extra close attention to units. Break it down and work on filtering out extraneous words and figures so that you end up with a basic math problem. Good luck.

When you're not used to metric, it can be sort of weird....

If you want 1/4 cup (vs quart), it's 1/4 of 240 cc. Divide 240 by 4, to get 60 cc

To get 1/4 quart-- one quart has 4 cups...one cup has 240 cc, as you know.

You'll get the hang of it. It's just having to look at things a little differently- and (as I so miserably demonstrated) reading carefully (that was to me - lol....)

Also, and I mean this with kindness:D- it's hard to know 'tone of voice' in written posts vs face to face conversation. I've often thought people were responding in a way that ended up not being the case. This is a place to ask questions- and get responses from a lot of people...my general policy is to assume people are not being sarcastic unless the language becomes really negative (I tend to be sensitive and had to reprogram myself to not feel attacked- it's hard with no real relationship with people to know how they come across).

I think it's great that there's a place like this for future nurses to ask questions. :)
