I applied for a PICU job last week. I feel the interview went well but assumed there were likely other candidates for the job still to be interview since my interview was at the beginning of the week. I haven't heard anything back, and the only thing the director told me was that after I met with the shift supervisors (who did the actual interview) she would get with them and they would discuss my application.

So, now it's been almost a week and I'm not sure what I should do. The job posting is still open. Do I call and ask about it? wait? What's the standard wait on something like this? With my current job I had it by the end of the interview so there was no waiting, but this job is at a much bigger hospital. Any thoughts?

If a week has gone by, I would contact them for a followup.

While a week is not an excessive length of time ... I would call and politely ask what the status of your application is.

For the record, I recommend asking about the timetable during an interview and saying something like, "If I don't hear from you within a week, I'll call back to find out the status of my application." Or you can ask, "When can I expect to hear back from you about the position?" In other words, end the interview by laying the groundwork for the next phase of the application process.
