I need to come up with a topic for a research paper I'm writing for an English class. While it is not a nursing class, I am starting NS this fall and since I have to spend a lot of time researching this paper, I thought it would be great to write it on something that may help me in the long run. Can anyone suggest any interesting ideas you wish you had known more about before you started? Thanks in advance! :redbeathe

Do you have any special intersts in nursing? For example, are you particularly interested in working with children? or with the elderly? with critically ill people? or in an outpatient setting? etc. If you have an inkling as to what population you would most like to worth with, that would point you in a direction. You could choose a major issue that would afftect that population.

Another way to go with your current assignment would be to pick something very general about the profession of nursing and/or the experience of being a nursing student. For example, you could pick the worldwide "nursing shortage" that has been much written about in the past few years ... and how the recent downslide of the ecomony has effected the supply and demand dynamics of that crucial nursing workforce issue. Jobs used to be plentiful, now they are scarce ... but are predicted to be plentiful again in a few years as the economy improves.

You might also want to research the long-range trend of increasing educational requirements for nurses -- from back in the 19th century when nures were not even licenced through the 20th certury when formal education and licensing was established , to the current 21st century requirements for BSN's and graduate degrees for many nursing jobs.

Nursing history is another topic that is usually interesting -- e.g. nursing in the civil war or WWI or WWII, etc. ... or military nursing today.

These are just a few ideas off the top of my head.
