Let's do something about the California BRN upcoming decision about Excelsior. I called the BRN a few minutes ago. (10 Sep 03 noon) I was told they have not made the final decision yet, but will do so friday. I asked how we could comment on this. I was told to fax a letter to Ruthanne Terry at 916-327-4402.

If all of us fax them and let them know how absurd this is, there is a slim chance we can make a difference.

Recommendation of Education/Licensing Committee

Regarding Excelsior College

August 21, 2003

On August 21, 2003, the Education/Licensing Committee conducted a public meeting and voted to recommend the following action to the full Board of Registered Nursing:

"To approve removal of recognition of Excelsior College Nursing Program as

meeting California education requirements as of September 13, 2003, and to not

accept Excelsior students who enroll on or after September 13, 2003."

The full Board will meet on September 12, 2003, to discuss and act on this recommendation. The meeting takes place at the Hilton Burbank Airport and Convention Center, and it begins at 9:00 am. The meeting is open to the public.

I am planning on attending.

I wish I could attend. I don't actually live in California, but I am an enrolled Excelsior student. The BRN is charged with protecting public safety by regulating the practice of Registered Nursing. By removing Excelsiors recognition, they will be endangering the public by denying experienced clinical professionals the chance to become Registered Nurses. This will worsen, albeit slightly, an already horrific nursing shortage that endangers the lives of patients everyday! This is one guy who thinks the BRN should realize that if they protect and promote the profession of Nursing, the nurses will protect the public!!

I'm hoping that many Excelsior/ Regents students and grads attend and make their voices heard. Perhaps if there is an opportunity the board could be asked if any of THEM could pass the CPNE!
