My 25 year old daughter is 3 months pregnant with my first grandchild. Had a physical today and was told she had a I-II/VI systolic heart murmur. I'm in LTC and that's a whole different set of cardiac situations. Have been looking on the web for easy to understand info on this, but am having some trouble. Anybody out there who can let us know if this is serious or not?? From what I can remember from school (100 years ago), I think this is a very mild murmur...worrysome though as heart trouble runs in this family. Any input or soothing words are very welcome. I had a murmer with my second. Also very low-grade. And also diagnosed in the first trimester. My MD explained at the time that it is because of extra volume caused by preg. I am Ok now with no murmer. BTW, congratulations on being a grandma. Good luck to your daughter with the rest of her preg.

Heart murmurs are not unusual in pregnancy due to the increased blood volume. I wouldn't worry about it unduly. I'd want to know, of course, if the physician thought it was anything.

It is indeed VERY common to develop heart murmurs early on in pregnancy that resolve within the first few weeks post-partum. if the doctor is concerned, then it will warrant investigation. Otherwise, I would not worry about it too much. I hope all goes well for her and your new grandbaby when birthtime arrives!

I used to teach heart sounds at different points of my life.

This used to be called a "flow murmur of pregnancy" and Kimmicoobug did a nice job of explaining the cause of it. It is labeled as an "innocent" murmur because there is no pathological reason or effect to (or from) it. It will resolve during the immediate post partum period. I don't know if it is still referred to by that name, but I suggest you Google it and see. (I just did that and found 2 good atricles on it).

As far heart murmurs in teens, these can either be innocent or worrisome; it all depends on what is the timing, how loud, systolic or diastolic, and are there other symptoms that the MD is concerned about? Make sure your cousin is seeing a good cardiologist! That is about all I can tell you on such a general question. Sorry.

i just had my annual physical on 9/9/05 -at that time i was given a pregnancy test just to rule it out (it was -). at that same appointment my doctor identified that i had a heart murmur. on monday the 12th i took an hpt and found out i was pregnant. my question is this: i know that pregnancy can cause murmurs but can it cause them that early??? i do have to have an echo soon, but i am so freaked out that it's gonna be something bad. i can't help but be even more stressed out.
